ABSTRACT
The cell body (perikaryon) of a neuron (Figure 1) contains the nucleus, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, and mitochondria, and maintains high levels of biosynthetic activity. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is densely packed with ribosomes, forming neuron-specific structures called Nissl bodies that allow very high rates of protein synthesis.
