ABSTRACT
The relatedness of Bacteria to one another is discussed elsewhere in this book (SECTION C6) in the context of diversity. Most of the major phyla (Gram-positive, Cyanobacteria, and so on) have been deduced from classic taxonomic methods and have been in place for several decades. The more recent advent of molecular phylogenetic methods has made phylogeny more accessible to the laboratory microbiologist.
