ABSTRACT
Eyes around the world were focussed on the Chernobyl area and on Soviet attempts to cope with the disaster. Foreign diplomatic pressure, coupled with an intent to play down the seriousness of the accident at home, forced the Soviet government to issue a further statement through Tass on the Tuesday evening (29 April).
