ABSTRACT

At the end of Chapter 2, I mentioned Stephen Jay Gould, who late in life published a book entitled Rocks of Ages, in which he argued that science and religion need in no way be in con¯ict (Gould 2001). Science and religion, he said, are two entirely separate domains of intellectual authority, two non-overlapping magisteria as he majestically put it, and the religionist and the scientist are each free to go about their business without in any way having to glance over their shoulder to look what the other is up to.
