ABSTRACT
National matchmaking agencies; a ministry devoted to giving positive spins to marriage and childbearing; a mandatory savings system that secures housing for married couples—these are some of the institutional tools aimed at encouraging marriage and fertility in Singapore. In this chapter, I elaborate on these institutional mechanisms and how Singaporeans negotiate them in their lives. It is through these negotiations, I argue, that the form and content of being Singaporean are articulated.
