ABSTRACT
The ongoing relationship between the construction of modernity and the creation of a metropolitan society is the subject of this chapter. I will argue that the relationship, always present, is now stronger and more globalized. It is now possible to identify a metropolitan modernity or, to be more precise, global metropolitan modernities. Let me begin with some definitions, not as endpoints but as apertures into wider debates.
