ABSTRACT

This chapter considers probation in other countries. It begins with a brief account of the other jurisdictions of the United Kingdom and goes on to consider some aspects of contemporary probation in Europe. A number of influences have brought it about that policy and practice developed in one country have been ‘transferred’ to others and these processes will also be discussed. These accounts are instructive not only for their own sake but for the light that they shed, through comparison and contrast, upon probation in England and Wales.
