ABSTRACT

The ‘modern’ concepts and technology brought to Korea by foreigners before the Japanese colonial period, and the illustration of these ideas through devices such as magic lantern equipment and, later, motion pictures, had a profound impact on traditional Korean culture and ways of living. By retracing the history of cinema in Korea back to its antecedents, this book has restored some vital missing parts to a wider historical narrative burdened by long-held but limited views of the impact of foreign cinema culture on Korea and its society.
