ABSTRACT

The other sections of this Part have focused on linking a language with a specific sport. In this section we look at ways of engaging students in language learning through different PE activities that can be used independently of each other to start or end a lesson, or collectively if you are looking for ideas for a cross-curricular Languages and PE Day.The ideas presented here give just a flavour of the things that can be done in such a setting.Staff in your PE department will no doubt have further suggestions, so it is certainly worth involving them if you are planning a whole-day event. Don’t forget either that nonlanguages staff members willing to try a few words in a new language are great role models for younger students. It has also been noted (e.g. Johnson, 2008; Felder and Henriques, 1995) that students adopt different language learning styles. Offering a language lesson in a PE context will appeal to those who are active learners and will also provide others with an opportunity to try out new or different ways of learning.
