ABSTRACT

The idea of combining language learning and various forms of technology is very attractive to young people, many of whom feel completely at home harnessing new technologies. This Part presents four projects, all developed as part of the national Routes into Languages initiative and each based around the use of different media linked to language teaching. Each project is easy to adapt into other languages and all aim to motivate and maximise active target-language use.The first project, Languages, camera, action, involves film-making in the target language and examples are given in German in the book, with translations of key material in French included in the accompanying DVD materials. The second project,Digital Storytelling, is presented in Spanish and helps students to create animated presentations, complete with a soundtrack in the target language, using specific computer software. This is followed by another very practical project, Languages and Subtitling, which again links language skills with film and media technology, whilst also providing insight into potential careers in this area and the skills required in real-life subtitling. The final project,Language on Film, again captures the best of the new secondary curriculum, combining language learning with the applied use of technology and learning new media skills. Students involved with the project have an open-ended task which allows them to explore their own creativity and imagination, whilst the project itself provides a meaningful context for using and developing language skills.
