ABSTRACT

Learning does not follow a pre-determined pattern; it relies on a variety of factors, including intellectual capacity, motivation, determination, quality of teaching, experience in learning, relevance of the subject matter. The circumstances in which people find themselves have a major effect on the quality of learning; for instance, someone anxious about missing a train won’t be able to concentrate on the closing minutes of the lecture as well as someone who lives around the corner and has time to spare. The personality of the teacher, the importance of the occasion, the physical conditions of the room, availability of resources, and the extent to which a child feels at ease in the surroundings, all affect the learning experience. This chapter contains information and suggestions about ways in which the learning climate can be enhanced in such a way that pupils can make confident progress in their work.
