ABSTRACT

Over the past twenty-five years or so the education of children with special educational needs (SEN) has assumed an increasingly high profile in schools. Once seen as a specialist area, it is now the responsibility of every teacher. This chapter starts by reviewing background information about relevant legislation and giving a historical perspective on the subject. An understanding of the terms ‘special educational needs’ and ‘inclusion’ is then explored, with reference to the Code of Practice. Finally, advice is offered about successfully dealing with SEN in the classroom, including writing an individual education plan (IEP) and working with other professionals.
