ABSTRACT

Parents are the first educators of their children. Once formal schooling begins, teachers assume some of the responsibility, but the closer the partnership in learning between school and home, the more that children benefit. The first part of the chapter explores the relationship between teachers and parents, including professional boundaries, informal and formal liaison, parent meetings, coping with difficult parents and the role of parents in the classroom. The second part of the chapter considers the increasingly important role of other adults in supporting and enriching children's education.
