ABSTRACT
It’s likely that many people reading the title of this chapter would have heard it mentally or read it aloud in a snappish, slightly warning and maybe rather outraged tone of voice. Possibly an image flashed up in your mind’s eye of an actual person you remember, or one that your imagination created for you. In writing these words, Steve saw a Jean Brodie-ish figure, thin and hatchetfaced with greying hair scraped back severely and piled into a bun. She was wearing a grey fleck tweed two-piece and ‘sensible’ shoes; what you might call the spinster stereotype.
