ABSTRACT

A health and safety policy aims to influence all the activities undertaken in the early years setting, including the people, equipment and materials, and how work is structured. By providing a written policy that encompasses all aspects of health and safety, it shows to staff, parents and outside organisations that hazards have been identified and risks have been assessed, then eliminated or controlled. This chapter provides examples of audit tools to assess the main areas of health and safety, including security, personal safety, fire, first aid, moving and handling, electrical hazards, and hazardous substances.
