ABSTRACT

The purposes of this final chapter are threefold. First, the aim is to examine the implications of the present research for making immediate improvements to police custody for practitioners and for suspects. Second, the aim is to examine the possibilities for further research. I argue that future research could be harnessed to a framework which reflects not only understandings of how the police custody process works, but also how it should work. Third, I explore how a clear understanding of police custody could be used in ongoing assessments of its quality and in ongoing reforms.
