ABSTRACT
This chapter continues our historical review of the relationship between the president and the news media. The chapter examines presidential—press relations from 1933, the year that Franklin D. Roosevelt took office, to 1981, the first year of Ronald Reagan's presidency. Roosevelt expanded the powers of presidential communication, and Reagan took presidential governance into the television age. Thus, this chapter begins with Roosevelt and ends with Jimmy Carter, who preceded Reagan in the White House.
