ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, I outlined four coherence principles that predict when a recipient will sense coherence in discourse, as well as the types of knowledge that affect his or her sense of coherence. I demonstrated that one of these principles has a direct correlate in Gestalt theories of unity in visual and auditory phenomena, and concluded that Grice's concept of relation describes a recipient's sense of one aspect of discourse coherence—continuity. In this chapter, I consider only that one aspect of coherence. Thus, I argue that cohesion and coherence involving continuity are closely related.
