ABSTRACT
Our starting point is at the threshold of a shadowy realm of enigma and paradox, the human brain. Any attempt to understand writing must begin with the relationship between language and thought, and this requires entering a world where language does not exist. There lies the first paradox, that the meaning of language is beyond words or direct inspection. The exploration of writing must begin before words or images are even formed. Consider the problem.
