ABSTRACT

Have you ever smoked cigarettes, or have you ever been annoyed at breathing someone else's smoke? If so, you are part of an enormous public relations war. It is not against the law to smoke in most places, nor is it illegal to manufacture tobacco products, but smoking has become a major battleground in America. The "tobacco wars" are to some extent about legislation and scientific evidence, but far more important for us, they are wars of persuasion, using the techniques of public relations to influence public opinion through mass media. It is safe to say that hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent annually on public relations in the tobacco wars.
