ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the process of carrying out evaluation research on an e-learning environment. An e-learning environment is built from one or more e-learning artefacts, and placed in context through the desired learning outcomes and the designed learning tasks. The chapter focuses on the overall evaluation-research goal as a preparation for practically conducting evaluation research on the ground. The development of an evaluation- research matrix is a systematic way to approach the complexity of multiple questions, participants and methods. The matrix provides a condensed overview of the evaluation-research activity, and is an aid to planning the study. The development of an evaluation-research matrix is a cyclical, reflective process that can benefit from discussion with colleagues. The divide-and-conquer technique of the evaluation-research matrix can contribute to the development of the instruments used to generate the data.
