ABSTRACT
Introduction There is a popular conception that anyone can teach young children, that no special abilities or preparation are needed beyond possession of a nurturing attitude. Research studies have found, however, that young children achieve better academically and are more socially competent when they have been in educational and caregiving situations with personnel who received special preparation in early childhood education and child development.
