ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we shall consider the key trends in crime prevention that have occurred over the last 30 years and we shall explore

their links with different strands of criminological thought. More importantly, however, this chapter will be just as concerned to demonstrate what has been made visible and invisible within these trends. In other words, the reader will be asked to think about what kinds of crimes policy trends have paid attention to and why. Thus, reinforcing another theme from Chapter 1: the importance to criminology of thinking critically about policy and the evidence used to support it. But first, it is important to say something about what is assumed by the idea of crime prevention.
