ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines an analytical framework for investigating the relationship between non-professional forms of sport and social mobility. It unpacks the different components of this relationship and defines the key concepts and associations posited. Sport participation is conceptualized as a potential vehicle for the creation, accumulation and conversion of different forms of capital (economic, cultural and social) from which certain benefits can be derived that enable social agents to improve or maintain their social position. In other words, multiform capital is regarded as a “resource to action” which can form a basis for (or a liability to) social mobility.
