ABSTRACT

Why a textbook? It might seem odd that in the twenty-first century the academic textbook is still going; that it hasn’t been replaced by a more interactive internet-based form easily downloadable as an app. This seems even odder when the textbook is for media studies; a new and innovative course which challenges some of the more traditional approaches of longer-established subjects. It is the case though that a textbook – designed to be used alongside a companion website and all the resources of the internet – is still capable of fulfilling a specific need for students (and interested readers): that of providing reliable information, being a challenging and stimulating presence and hopefully inspiring you to continue your study to A2 and beyond. This description could also apply to the role of the teacher and that is deliberate; the aim of the book is to support you in your AS level study, to be an additional resource which will reinforce your classroom knowledge, explain areas you might find challenging and guide you in developing your understanding.
