ABSTRACT

In previous chapters, I emphasized the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of today’s world and suggested that transformative leadership is a way forward. In Chapter 2, I also clarifi ed the distinctions between transformative leadership and other theories and approaches and identifi ed several key characteristics of transformative leadership. In this chapter, I elaborate on the fi rst three characteristics: the mandate to effect deep and equitable change; the need to deconstruct and reconstruct knowledge frameworks that perpetuate inequity and injustice; and the need for educational leaders to promote emancipation, democracy, equity, and justice. They are obviously inextricably interconnected.
