ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys various attempts at the international level to develop a framework for the control of MNCs. In this respect, the chapter discusses the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights and their applicability to MNCs. Furthermore, the chapter discusses various international initiatives to control MNCs including the International Labour Organisation's Tripartite Declaration of Principles Concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy, the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, the United Nation's Global Compact, the Norms on Responsibility of Transnational Corporations and other Business Enterprises with regard to Human Rights (the Norms) and the work of the special representative of the UN secretary general on the issue of human rights and MNCs and other business enterprises. The chapter ends with a brief discussion of developments in international environmental law regulation and MNCs.
