ABSTRACT
In the ‘deficit’ theories previously presented (see previous chapter) a question was posed on the problem of isolating cause and effect in determining the personality attributes of an underclass or the poor. Do the five theses themselves lead to social inequality, or is it the present denial of competence, belonging and usefulness in education, work, decision making and cultural identity that leads to that condition?
