ABSTRACT

I repeat that my purpose is limited here. I am not talking about methodology. I am not commenting on such issues as so-called creative activities, the desirability of field trips, topics for consideration or problem-solving exercises, or the need to develop self-discipline. I am merely suggesting, firmly and succinctly, that in the early years of schooling we ought at least to aim to ensure that all children are basically numerate, literate and healthy and that they have some concern for behaving in ways that do not cause pain to others.
