ABSTRACT

Having put forward and explained the hypothesis that associates the concept of the worthwhile with pleasure, how am I going to set about 'causing the reader's mind to assent to its truth'? I am going to outline a specific curriculum, putting forward my reasons for the inclusion of each element. In each case the reasoning ultimately relates to considerations of pleasure, although the precise nature of the link between the activity and pleasure varies considerably from element to element, and the manner in which I present my argument for each element varies accordingly. One hardly needs to do more than state that physical health is a means to gaining pleasure and avoiding pain, whereas the claim that it is worthwhile for children to study history, in the sense that such study is particularly conducive to maximising pleasure in the community, requires rather more explication.
