ABSTRACT

For many pupils the concept of holy is one that they may not have considered or encountered very often. The concept is fundamentally important, however, to enable pupils to develop some understanding about religion and how many religious people view and respond to certain objects or people. The book provides the example of Mary who, for many Christians, is regarded as holy, being chosen by God to give birth to God on earth (or God's son). This unit, therefore, is particularly successful in the autumn term in the run-up to Christmas. It also uses the imagery and traditions of the Catholic Church which explicitly depicts and describes Mary as holy. There is also the example of the Torah scrolls as holy for Jewish people. In both these units it is necessary to use religious material in the enquire element of the cycle in order to illustrate the meaning of holy.
