ABSTRACT

This unit of work enables pupils to investigate what symbols are and why they are meaningful to individuals and groups of people. Some symbols can be elements of the natural world, such as water or fire, while others might be food or items of clothing, and others may be shapes or designs or even gestures. They are symbols when they have become imbued with meaning and significance. This unit provides an enquiry into a range of symbols. In the book the example of the empty cross is explored as a potent symbol for Christians. This is followed by examples of how the concept symbol can be explored within aspects of other major religions.
