ABSTRACT

This concept resonates with many pupils for they can often identify rituals in their own lives and appreciate their importance. The key to their enquiry into this concept is to help them to recognise that rituals are not the same as routines, but that they are symbolic acts and have particular significance which may not always be obvious to an outsider. The unit enables pupils to investigate what rituals are and why they are meaningful to individuals and groups of people, both religious and non-religious. In the book the example of the sharing of bread and wine during the Eucharist/Communion service is explored as a potent ritual for Christians. This is followed by examples of how ritual can be explored within aspects of other major religions.
