ABSTRACT

The concept of belonging is one that is fundamentally important in young children’s lives, and naturally emanates from their own interests and enquiries. Exploring this concept or key idea in religious contexts will broaden children’s experiences and enable them to make wider connections, forming the foundation for enquiring into the concept community or identity in Key Stage 2. This unit explores the concept belonging in the context of what helps Christians feel as though they belong in a church, and focuses on the ideas of shared values, mutual support, familiarity with surroundings and activities, and where Christians frequently find that they feel comfortable. It also provides examples of how belonging can be explored within aspects of other major religions.
