ABSTRACT
Ancient patterns of administration were based upon the assumption that a liberally educated gentleman could take thought on everything that mattered and arrive at a universally valid decision. Such preparation as was required could be found in traditional liberal studies, or in the additional use of mathematical concepts and proof, or in a training in logic.
