ABSTRACT
The roots of the Chinese educational tradition can be traced back, through written works, for nearly four thousand years. For most of the time the dominant philosophy was, of course, Confucianism, itself a refined expression of the primitive traditions of the Chinese people. The aim was the formation, by exercises of an ethical, intellectual and musical sort as well as by rigorous physical training, of a man able to rule himself and others.
