In his essay ‘Archive fever’, Derrida links institutions with the need to keep

records: ‘every archive . . . is at once institutive and conservative’ (Derrida and

Prenowitz, 1995, p. 12). Institutions, such as government departments,

hospitals, churches, schools, professional institutes, architectural organisations

and, of course, universities, are at the apogee of the impulse to conserve.
