ABSTRACT

Criminal investigation is a complex and sometimes tedious process that requires a certain knowledge base, skills and attention to detail. Each case that is investigated is different, and should be treated individually while adhering to standard policies and procedures. This chapter introduces you to some fundamental topics surrounding criminal investigations, defining the idea and setting it within the context of the adversarial Criminal Justice System in operation in England and Wales. Understanding the historical aspect of criminal investigations is important so as to ensure past mistakes are not repeated, while knowledge of the role of the Crown Prosecution Service and the distinct phases of an investigation are vital in developing an appropriate investigation strategy, whatever the incident under investigation.
