ABSTRACT

The profession of midwifery in the United States considers therapeutic presence an essential part of midwifery care (ACNM 2004). In this chapter I present the findings of a hermeneutical phenomenological exploration of the meaning of ‘being with woman’ for a specific group of American midwives. These interpretations have been elucidated through poetry written by American midwives about being a midwife or attending women in childbirth. I have used poetry as the basis of interpretation due to the power of poetic metaphor to provide a rich source of unique human meaning, suited to qualitative enquiry (Hunter 2002a).
