ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5 we focus on UK teachers’ preconceptions and the performance of their students. The findings are relevant to those outside as well as within the UK, as we explore the lessons that may be learnt from the research by all teachers. You will remember that we asked teachers at Arial (a post-1992, teaching-led university) and Baskerville (a Russell Group, research-focused university) to tell us the key characteristics of students who perform well and those who do less well. We then surveyed those teachers’ students to identify who had those characteristics. Finally, we compared end-of-course exam or assessment performance with survey responses to see if students achieved the expected levels of performance. Full details of the research method are given in Chapter 2.
