ABSTRACT

The words ‘integrate’ and ‘integration’ derive from the Latin word integratus , past participle of integrare , meaning to make whole, to renew. Meanings of integrate include to make whole or complete by adding or bringing together parts; to put or bring (parts) together into a whole; to unify; and to give or indicate the whole, sum, or total of something. Integration has a special meaning in mathematics where, not surprisingly perhaps, the reverse process is referred to as differentiation. In terms of curriculum, however, it would seem that integration is concerned with bringing together parts of the curriculum which would otherwise be separate and differentiated.
