ABSTRACT

The major distinctive feature of multiple describers is that the focus of their life stories involves the choice of, and movement between, roles and identities that are already available within society. But in many ways this kind of narrative focusses on an open exploration of the opportunities on offer. In this chapter we have focussed on two specific categories of exploration to show how these descriptive narratives are used to open up courses of action and learning strategies. We have particularly focussed on two types of open exploration: the explorations surrounding the notion of home and ethnic identity, and the exploration of scholarship opportunities, to illustrate the nature of the pattern of learning, agency and identity that are at work.
