ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters we have seen how different narrative styles craft varied patterns to portray selfhood and identity. We must, however, be wary of overestimating the continuity and stability of narrative characterizations and patterns of selfhood. Quite clearly, ‘the self is or can be many different things at any given point in time or period in a person’s life’ (McAdams 2001: 116). As a result, our narrative characterizations of selfhood are themselves subject to change and discontinuity.
