ABSTRACT

The Culture of Science Science has a culture all its own with certain norms, materials and actions. Just as any culture can be reduced to stereotypes, science is no diff erent. Th e caricature of a scientist takes the form of a White man with wild, uncontrollable hair, who is wearing a lab coat and works in a disorganized and dangerous lab. Among famous scientists we could include Albert Einstein (and he did have the wild hair), Th omas Edison (his lab was full of strange equipment), and the cartoon

scientists on television and in movies. Th e problem with a stereotype is that it uses a fi ctional person as the representative for a group of people or an entire culture.
