Aspects of Form: Street and Related Scenes book
Writer and journalist, Peter Popham, grew up in London, spent his university years in the English regional ‘capital’ of Leeds and later moved to Tokyo, from where he emerged as a respected commentator upon architecture and cities. To him ‘Streets seem to have little significance in the Japanese urban scheme of things to warrant the prestige that names confer’ (Popham, 1985, p. 48). A key aspect of the previous chapter was the relative prominence of the street in the Western scheme of things and this is particularly apparent in the organizational and aesthetic ordering of cities.
