ABSTRACT

I selected each of the above articles to illustrate a fit or lack of fit with the interpretative stance toward research. Being able to recognize what an interpretative inquiry article or evaluation project looks like is important not only for the construction of your own projects but also during the review of the literature process. While one does not need to cite only inquiries that are within the interpretative framework in the review of the literature, it is helpful to be able to recognize the framework within which the research is conducted as the results are colored by the research framework. A careful study of other interpretative inquiries will provide clues as how you might proceed with your own project. Examine the non-interpretative studies you include in your research in the light of their ontology and their epistemology. Seen through the lens of ontology and epistemology these studies can contribute to our greater understanding of the phenomena under investigation. Without some sense of how a variety of studies fit together you may not be able to get a good picture of the phenomena and doing a critical review of the literature becomes challenging. The points will be further developed in Chapters 5 and 9.
