ABSTRACT

In the course of this work I have been roaming far and wide in the realms of philosophy and of the human sciences and so it will be appropriate in this final chapter to provide a retrospective sketch of my long itinerary, focussing now on the main stations en route and indicating the main conclusions at which I have arrived. Since such a wide-ranging work also raises a variety of difficult issues with which I have not been able to deal here for reasons of space and scope, I shall also indicate, in the spirit of critical rationalism which I have invoked throughout, a number of important questions which I have left open and outstanding.
