ABSTRACT
In this first chapter I will deal with the thesis stage of the overall dialectical argument of Part 1 of the book; that is to say, I will outline the positive arguments in defence of a critical and philosophically-based methodology of science that will stand in a normative relation to the practices of the various sciences.
