ABSTRACT

We all use our faces to give messages – either wittingly or unwittingly! Think of one colleague giving a knowing wink to another at a meeting or the child who sticks his tongue out at a peer who has annoyed him intensely! This is an example of the deliberate use of the face. But sometimes, the face can betray us. It can leak what we truly feel or believe. For example, Hart (1995) found that judges’ expressions can unconsciously influence jurors. Physicians’ expressions can have an impact on patients (Ambady et al., 2002). TV presenters may inadvertently leak their favourite political candidate (Mullen, 1986).
