ABSTRACT

Nonverbal communication is woven into many aspects of psychology and pedagogy. Your X-Factor is hard-wired into your psyche and plays an important role in how we learn and how we teach. We collect information nonverbally on a continuous basis, with such information playing a key role in the formulation of emotional responses and memories. These can last a long time and accordingly are critical when we think about short- and long-term learning objectives. Part I hopefully has shown you that nonverbal communication has been around since our early ancestors and that there are solid reasons for exploiting it in the classroom context. Students are adept at reading nonverbal communication and such reading does have an impact on educational achievement. Having covered the educational value of developing your X-Factor, the next section looks closely at a number of specific features of nonverbal communication, such as smiling, eye contact, body language, use of space and so on.
